Free Our Internet Statement On Twitter’s Promotion of #netneutrality Hashtag

We are disappointed that Twitter continues to ignore the violence, direct death threats, and harassment related to the topic of Net Neutrality on its platform. As the company promotes the #netneutrality hashtag, where many users are threatening violence to the FCC Chairman and others, it turns a blind eye to violations of its own policies. Adding insult to injury, the caption accompanying the hashtag promotion includes a goal of promoting “free expression, innovation & public safety.” The doublespeak is too rich.

As Free Our Internet Executive Director Christie-Lee McNally noted in a December 8th letter to Twitter, which Twitter continues to ignore, these vile threats must be taken seriously. We can only hope that Twitter’s promotion doesn’t incite further violence on its platform.
